Oh holy crap, those are actual comments? MAY THEY ALL STEP ON LEGOS FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. >:|||||||||||
SO TRUE. UGH people need to comment on podfics more, because it is so hard to want to work when you don't even get kudos, let alone you get crap like this piled on them.
ILU and you are so amazing!
Take heart? :( I don't even get kudos most of the time! I don't even understand people sometimes. I get enough downloads to run out of bandwidth, but not even a button press? SO I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND.
Hey. Yep these were the actual messages. Minus a few. I didn't include the ones that weren't sent anonymous because at least the other people had the balls to put their user name on their hate.
I LOVE THAT SONG! I've been singing it on a loop. I might just start singing it to people in RL when they act a fool.
I'm sort of over kudos. They are nice when they happen, but it isn't the reason I do what I do I guess. But when I get a rad as fuck comment, that will sometimes fuel me for days-weeks-months!
I so wish you created podfic in a my fandoms, because I would so listen to you. You have a great voice, wonderfully expressive, and fuck anyone who says different.
I really have such a hard time how people can be so thoughtless and assholeish. And that weird sense of entitlement that a lot of fans seem to have about podfic - how it's for their pleasure, and you need to conform to their likes and dislikes. Grr.
*pets you* I'm sorry that people have left nasty comments on your works.
Thank you for the rec. I was kind of grinning like an asshole at it when I came across it in my timeline. <333 I am digging the supportive things people are saying.
Jesus Christ. On second thought, no... pretty sure he wouldn't appreciate this.
I sincerely hope that most of these are the same person, because I would hate to think there are very many more of them out there. The arrogant, ignorant gall of it! Because reading style is completely under a person's control, as are her voice, inflection and accent. And goodness knows if that's true, then performance choices such as acting, and the voices one gives the characters are incredibly easy to fix. And by "fix" I mean, "Do them the way Anonymous likes to hear them."
This is doing fandom wrong if I ever saw it. The ONLY thing to do with fanworks that you don't care for is to click away. I don't mind listeners calling attention to mistakes in the recording—in fact I encourage it—and for sure I've often thought, "This story could have used a beta reader. Or two." but you don't criticize people for something they can't help.
Really, fandom? Really?
*sighs* I hope this post was helpful for you in venting some of the hurt, my dear. It's easy to say, "Pay no attention to these idiots." but much harder to do. For example, I read a comment on one of the anon memes—I went looking for it, so that's on me—that said something like, "I hate to say it because she's such a nice woman, but chemm80 reads like a robot." Even that—nowhere near as ugly as this— was something I couldn't quite shake off, and I think of it every time I read, and I'm pretty sure it was somewhere in the neighborhood of two years ago. People need to think before they speak type. On the other hand, this person had some idea of what they were doing, or they wouldn't have commented anon. Maybe someone will listen to this post and realize that their comments really aren't helpful at all. If they want to actually help, here's a link to the proper way to comment on podfic; maybe you can direct any future idiots there.
You are so brave to go look for yourself on an anonmeme. I pretend they don't exist, especially now that I podfic, because I'm an emotional reader (I'm actually toned down for podfic!) and I know that that is the exact opposite of people's preference. D: I'd hate to see what they say. I dread not knowing, but I know that it would hurt me more to go look.
Yes, well, I've always been too curious for my own good. And I've spent a lifetime trying to learn to take constructive criticism without being crushed, so there's that. But it's risky, too. Some emotional wounds are permanent, and although we choose how to let others' opinions affect us, it can be very, very difficult to make the right choices. I think Jinxy is being really brave trying to move past this as she is, and I'm glad to see it. (Besides, I'd hate for fandom to lose a podficcer of her calibre over this BS.)
Well, I've been the recipient of a chapter by chapter sporking once upon a time, so the fact that I'm back in fandom if a little thinner skinned is something. I don't bother with anons anymore, bascially.
Oh whoa, that stings. I don't blame you. Fandom is supposed to make you happy, so you're certainly right to stay away from the parts of it that... really don't.
Basically if it's not a comment on my fic/podfic/journal, I don't care anymore and do not go look. But I cannot even believe these people (person?) are leaving these kind of comments directly on her stuff! *shakes head at people*
No, me either. I've posted literally hundreds of podfics and that's never happened to me. The worst I've gotten have been people complaining because the download won't work for them, or wondering if I can make a version without music, etc. They're more whiners than direct attackers. But then again, before Teen Wolf I always worked in Supernatural and Generation Kill, both of which are reasonably mature fandoms, I think, maybe more so than Teen Wolf, so I may run into it yet.
I do believe from obsessively looking at the messages and reading them over and over that at least 2-3 of them must be coming from the same person. And all on different podfics...which is somewhat funny to me since they hate me so much, but can't stop listening to my work.
I'm not vein, but it reeks of jealousy??? Idek.
I have had major boo boos in the past when I've dragged a box too far in editing and something has overlapped...so I'm with you, I WELCOME that feedback, but the entitled bullshit I'm getting from these anons is just beyond me.
This was soooo therapeutic for me. And the response it's getting makes me feel so much relief.
I don't know what anon memes are, but something tells me I better not go looking. (I'm an aloof fandom person, I'm really not so familiar with a lot of stuff)
Thanks for that link, I will be referring to it quite a lot in the future. Schooling the peeps on the proper way to comment. Such a great tool.
<3333 (p.s. I'm sending you an email later about that phone sex fic)
Anon memes are comms with threads on various fandom subjects in which everyone is expected to comment ONLY anon. They serve as a place where you can give honest feedback, like on Big Bangs and such. I've mostly been around the Supernatural ones, and that can be a really brutal fandom, so. They also provide a place where people can be honest about the things that bug them without worrying about losing friends over it.
I think they have their value, if you're looking for honest feedback, for instance, but they can be really, really nasty, so if you're sensitive at all, it's best to stay away. And even if you're not, see the conversation with Majoline above. You view them at your own risk.
Oh hey! I just saw this post and couldn't believe the comments you got >:(( I hope you're managing to keep your spirit up and keep making the things that make you happy!
And I'm glad my little piece of meta looks helpful to you! :)
Thank you for making that meta. You put so much time into it! I appreciate it so much. I am not only going to share it with people, but I realized that perhaps even my feedback could use a little TLC.
YOU ARE FUCKING AMAZING AND I LOVE YOU, AND WHY MUST PEOPLE SUCK??? Seriously, about half the podfic on my iPod right now are by you, but pretty soon, that numbers gonna go up because YOU HAVE SO MANY MORE I NEED TO DOWNLOAD, WHY DO I NOT HAVE THESE OMG FSDKSL;A *NEEDS TO FRIEND*
I've also noticed something after 15 yrs in fandom, and that's the weird phenomena where only people who are well know and recognized by fandom get the anon hate. It's fucked up, sure, but there are probably THOUSANDS of listeners who love your work and just fail to comment because they are just like me and lazy pieces of shit who always fucking forget omg I'M SORRY!!! /0\
So, um. I'll totes kick their ass for you because NO. And I fight mean. ♥
Well I'm not popular/recognized by any means, so I think this is just a case of someone(s) out there really doesn't like my voice "sexy" voice. And the best part is that they tell me professional readers don't read that way...but...I am a professional reader now. So they can stuff it.
Why are people such passive aggressive assholes? I'm so glad I'm not prolific enough of a podficcer for anyone to bother "critiquing" me like that because I think I'd just stop. :(
BTW, your song choice in this is fabulous. AND I LIKE YOUR READING VOICE. *goes to see what fandoms you've recorded in*
I found this from podfic_love, and I'm so glad I did! This is amazing, and such a great way to work through the crap that sometimes comes our way. The next time I get a shitty comment, I'm coming straight here to remind myself that they are un-remarkable and not worth my tears.
FWIW, I LOVE listening to your podfics. I have half a dozen on them on my iPod at any given time, often in fandoms I've never experienced *cough*Spartacus*cough*, but I don't care because I love the way you interpret characters. You bring them to life for me even when I don't know them. ♥
Oh gods! Those Sparty podfics make me cringe so hard!!! I was just starting out with those and hadn't yet found my voice...and my editing skills were lacking. I keep telling myself that I'm going to go back and re-record some of those fics one of these days. Sometimes I go back and listen and just squick so hard. Lolllzzz.
And I'm glad you enjoyed this. It was so cathartic getting it all out. Reading the anons horrible words aloud helped me realize how ridiculous they sound.
I take a lot of pride in the fact that it's kind of a slap in their faces too that I'm reading aloud their words in my horrible voice. I feel victorious!!!!!
UGH. WHY, ASSWIPES, WHY. I remember seeing some of these on your AO3/tumblr and clawing at the screen in a desperate try to remove them from the internet out of sheer hate. Wtf is wrong with some people that they can't backbutton in silence (beside obviously having bad tastes, but they can't help that I guess).
This is a great, positive way to work through this shit, and I'm really happy you've been able to! I loove this song, ever since I found it in the fanmix How I Really Don't Give A Fuck About You Any More, And I'm Moving On, which had several gems. All fun things to hum when people are being stupid. ;)
As you probably suspect by now, I find your works display great quality, skills, body, emotions, resourcefulness and imagination. You've both put me to sleep and kept me awake many, many nights already. You've made me hide my heating face in the subway, you've made me hum contently in the morning. I love your voice so much that I project it now: the other day your voice in my head has been reading a Derek/Laura fic that you didn't even perform.
Yue...You give me so many feelings. Thank you for always being vocal and being so good about leaving comments/kudos/praise. <3 I adore you. I'm adding that last paragraph to my list of things I look at when I need to be reminded of why I do what I do. Because what you said will stick with me for a long time. It's one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me.
BTW..was the Derek/Laura fic you were reading that biteoffcenter fic by theaeblackthorn?...because I have plans to record that!! I totally get what you mean. I used to read fics in Dodie's voice, lately I hear anna_unfolding's voice (because of her utterly brilliant new podfic In The Stretch, I've listened to it 4 times through already, and if you can get into Baseball RPF, I highly rec it.) So I think it's such an honor that you would hear words in my voice.
I recently podficced my first femslash fic and thought of you the whole time I was recording it...pretty sure you'd love it. (I hope it makes it into your playlist someday).
Anyway. I truly appreciate you. You are one of my favorite fandom people because seeing your name in my @'s or seeing your kudos/comments ALWAYS brightens my day.
I'm so sorry about this! You don't know me at all, but I am an avid listener, and a podficcer myself, and I am absolutely outraged on your behalf! The nerve here is astounding, honestly, and I can't believe these people think you're somehow compelled to fit all their little reader ticky-boxes because they want it. >:|
You keep doing you, yeah? I think you're great, and this podfic is great.
So you're totally wrong. I do know you! I'm just painfully shy, but I pretty much listen to everything you post.
I only upload my stuff to DW, so I often see your postings in Amp, and because you are kind enough to put streaming links in your posts, I oft click them.
I'm such a bozo for never having told you how much I like your stuff. I'm kind of a sucker for short podfics because sometimes it's hard for me to get engaged in a long one unless I'm running or driving, so I *love* short ones, and truly appreciate how often you churn out the short ones!
The first one I ever listened to of yours was I Make the Boys Fall Like Dominos and DAMN. Okay. So when I heard it my jaw dropped to the floor because I had podficced that same exact fic...but by a different author, and in a different fandom...and SHIT!!!! After researching it I realized my author had plagiarized it (your author had posted theirs one day before mine had posted hers). I felt so damn weird that I kind of blocked the whole thing out.
Anyway. Thanks for stopping by!! I thank you wholeheartedly for your kind words.
<333333
p.s. I'm terrible with titles, but you did this Brick podfic (Kara/Laura) a while back, and I think it's one of my favorite podfics in rotation in my iPod. So thank you!
Wow, thank you for the compliment! I'm really glad you enjoy the short ones, because those really are my favorite, where I can get a little bite of feeling (…and also less editing, ha). And I appreciate it so, so much when people compliment by Brick pods, because they are my darlings and they get so little love.
I totally didn't know that about All the Boys. Um, should we do something? Tell mind_conundrum? I've never really been in this situation.
I've never been in it either, and I think that's why I blocked it out. Here is the link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/412212. My author's version was posted 4 days after your author. It isn't 100% word-for-word, but it's damn close.
Let me know what you decide to do, if it's not too much trouble. (missdeidra@gmail.com) I still feel so uncomfortable about it to this day. I never recorded the author again because I don't know if she ripped off that other writer. I originally sent her a tumblr ask when I realized the similarity of the work, and she never answered me or spoke to me again. I don't know if the tumblr goblin ate my ask or if she was just ignoring me.
If you find out she plagiarized her, will you let me know so I can pull the podfic?
Anyway. I hope this is just one big misunderstanding.
I was linked to this from fire_juggler after receiving my own terribly rude comment on a podfic I've done. I can't believe those were real! People can be so incredibly hurtful. I don't mind if they're pointing out an actual error or something like that in the recording, but to say things about how you sound in your reading. RUDE! Don't say anything at all then, and click away. No one is forcing you to listen/read/view.
