A Montage of Luna Moments

Posted by Daily Otter

Earlier this month we told you about Luna’s one-year rescueversary, and VAMMRS has put together a sweet montage of favorite moments! They write:

It feels like just yesterday our team flew to Vancouver Island to rescue Luna, and now we're celebrating her one year rescue-versary! 🥳

She was the smallest sea otter pup we've ever rescued and she turned our lives upside down as the second sea otter pup to be rescued in 2024. Luna is now living happily with our partners at the Vancouver Aquarium along with 9 other rescued sea otters! ❤️

(That special one-day donation mentioned in this video has expired, btw.)

Sea Otter Pup Looks to Be Having the Happiest Dream

Posted by Daily Otter

Photo by Mimi Ditchie via Elakha Alliance, which writes:

Baby sea otters are most commonly called pups, though they can also be referred to as kits.

These fluffy pups come into the world wrapped in a thick, buoyant coat that keeps them bobbing on the surface like fuzzy little corks while mom dives for food. Sea otter moms are incredibly devoted: they groom, feed, and even wrap their pups in kelp to keep them from drifting away.

Sea otter pups nurse for up to six months and stay by mom’s side the whole time, learning how to dive, hunt, and crack open shellfish. Talk about an adorable apprenticeship in survival!

Sea Otter Checks Out Her New Digs

Posted by Daily Otter

Via Shedd Aquarium, which writes:

Jade, the newest rescued sea otter at Shedd Aquarium, is settling into her new home!

She’s experiencing a series of firsts — from meeting her animal care team and fellow otters like Luna and Watson, to getting familiar with behind-the-scenes spaces. Most recently, Jade ventured into the sea otter exhibit in the Abbott Oceanarium for the very first time.

Watch as she explores her new surroundings, swims with curiosity and enjoys some icy enrichment along the way.

And here, they write:

Meet the newest rescued sea otter at Shedd. 🦦

Introducing… Jade!

After a surprise-and-delight naming vote from our guests, Jade earned her name — inspired by Jade’s Cove, a stunning stretch of California coastline just south of Monterey.

This curious 3-year-old joins our rescued otter raft as a potential surrogate and ambassador, helping connect visitors to the kelp forests and coastlines her species calls home.

Since arriving at Shedd, Jade has been making a splash — exploring the exhibit, meeting fellow otters like Luna and Watson and practicing important skills like grooming, foraging and diving.
